Full Episode Transcript

Hello and welcome to the Pro-Fit podcast with me, your host Matt Robinson. Today I am here to go through part two of our three part mini-series around getting yourself setup on wine and having some sort of online presence for your fitness business or whatever type of coaching business or anything that it is at the minute in the first episode of this mini-series, which was episode 40, we talked about how you might need to rethink your online strategy and a lot of that was around how much time, energy and effort goes into the content that we create and how’s on social media and how we might want to change that and instead start building something for ourselves on our own land and start having our own platform from which we share content and still use social media.

But we’re sharing content with a view to bring in people back to our own platform so that from there we can deliver value, we can get them signed up to an email list and things like that. And we can actually choose what messages we share and how people receive that and things like this. We’re not having to play this battle of engagement and stuff like that, where social media can limit how many people see and hear what it is that we’ve got to say. So we’re going to build on from that. Today we’re going to talk about actually getting setup with your platform and what that might look like, some of the considerations and how it is that I’ve gone about doing it and I’m then going to show you how to actually do this process for yourself. So all of that information and all of those videos will live over at mattrobinson.blog/041 for episode forty one. So you can head over there to see all of that. So without further ado, let’s dive right in and dig in to this building your own online platform content.

Okay. So hopefully now we’re at a point where you’ve understood the potential importance of actually owning the platform from which you are deciding to represent yourself online. It’s not to say that these are the platforms aren’t important but there’s uh, an increased awareness around the fact that those platforms aren’t controlled by you and it might make more sense to have a place to send people where you have ultimate control over what happens, um, in terms of the content you create and how you share it with people. So what is this platform that we’re looking to build for ourselves well quite simply, it would be a website slash blog. It’d be somewhere very simply for you to share what, what it is you already create, um, but would also allow you to get people to subscribe to like an email list or something like that so that you can actually communicate with them more directly, um, on a regular basis and actually build long lasting relationships with people and deliver value over time.

So, when it comes to setting up a website or blog, there are actually several, you can do this. And you know as, as time goes on and technology advances actually becomes easier and easier to get these things set up. I’m going to give you a rundown of sort of three different approaches you can take to setting this up. I’ll tell you which one I went for and why I chose that. I’m not going to say that any one of these three ways is the way you have to do it. I’ll just give you the reasons why I decided to do it the way that I did it. So number one, the first way you can set something like this up is you can use a website like Wix or maybe even like go daddy or something like that. Or you can even set it up through like wordpress.com and use their platform.

You know this would be relatively cheap to do. It’s fairly simple to do. But the problem with that is, is the way I like to put it is that’s the equivalent of building your house on someone else’s land. And what I mean by that is, is you don’t actually own the space in which that website is hosted, you’re not in charge of where it is that your website lives. Again, it’s similar to build in something on a different platform. Yes, you may have your own little domain name but it will probably end in like.wordpress.com or even like.wix.com which doesn’t look particularly professional and you can probably pay a premium to have that removed, but even still you are relying on your site being held on their platform and over time you know they can change the fees, they can change things around, they can decide what you can and can’t get in terms of features and it’s very difficult to then move from that platform to somewhere else and put it onto your own plot of digital land elsewhere.

It becomes difficult to do that. I’ve built sites in that vein in the, in the past there came a point where I got quite limited as to what I could do with those websites and you end up having to start from scratch. So that is quite a, it’s quite an easy way to get off the ground and it’s quite an affordable way to get off the ground. But again, I’m looking at this from like a longer term perspective and I don’t always think that that’s the best way for people to go at it. If they’re going to approach this from right, this platform that I start now is going to be built with the mindset of it’s still around in sort of five, 10 years’ time. I think that you can go at it in a in a bit more professional way and actually own the land that you’re building your platform on. That’s the first way that you can do this and that’s the first way that you can actually approach looking at building your own website online.

The second way that you can go about doing this, and this is probably in many ways the most professional way to do this is to go out and hire a web designer and like a design agency to do this for you, now I know what everyone’s thinking as I mentioned that, is wow that’s going to be expensive and yeah it is, you know, it’s you paying for a service and if you’re paying for a good service, it’ll cost you a lot of money. It could cost you, you know, a few grand to get something like that off the ground and then they’ll probably be some sort of ongoing fee to maintain that website for you. I’ll make changes to it and things like that. And you know, if you’ve got the capital to do that and you really want to go out this full on, um, and really commit to it then yeah that might be the route to go down.

It might be, see if you can find yourself a good designer that can do this for you, that can work with you and put together your vision and get that online for you. A lot of it will mean that you can just get involved in the creative side of it and leave them to do all the technical stuff. Um, obviously they’re what you pay in far as you pay in for the convenience and the premium of having someone do a lot of the design work and that for you. So that’s, that’s another route that you can go down. Again, this is something I’ve had done in the past many moons ago with other stuff that I was involved in and you know, it’s great, It’s great to have that hands off approach. The bit that frustrated me about it wasn’t actually the cost.

The cost was fine, accepted the cost. It was more that when I wanted to change stuff and edit stuff, a lot of this communication with people like this like the designers was done via email and it’s a case of you have to email them to get them to change something. They then might make two or three changes and, and take a couple of days to do that. The email your back to let you know that the changes have been made and then you go and check your website and you think, ah, that wasn’t quite what a meant and then it has to be amended again and again and it just becomes this long chain of like, hard work and graft just to get the smallest things edited and changed. You know, I’m not saying that that couldn’t be made better with better lines of communication, it certainly could.

But what you’ve got to understand is, is that when you’re working with a designer, you are may be one client of however many they’ve got and there’s lots of people asking them to do lots of little jobs on an ongoing basis and it’s just you waiting your turn until you get to that top of that pile. So that you are at the top of their priority list, and again, that can get frustrating at times. So for me that option became less valuable. Like I say, it wasn’t really down to the money. It was more down to like the, the speed at which things can move when you’re not ultimately in control of what’s being changed and sometimes you want something changed and, they’ll come back to you and say, well we can’t do that. We need to think about this. And sometimes you know that’s, that’s great advice and he’s invaluable advice but there are other times where you just like, I want this change for this reason that I understand based on the feedback that I’ve been given and you would like to be able to just take hold of that and do it for yourself.

So that’s my thoughts on the design route. Definitely the most professional way to go. Definitely the most convenient way to go. It’s just that it’s going to be a pricier option and again you are giving up an element of control, which to me, I know I’m going to sound like a complete control freak. That was something that became painful for me. That was my main pain point when I went down this route. Having said all that, let’s have a look at option three and this is, this is the route that I ended up going down in a stuck to for the last several years that I’ve been doing this

Option three when getting yourself online is to go down the route of getting yourself some online land, which is hosting and then getting yourself some online property to put on so that online land, which would be a domain. Okay, so domain is the name that a website has. So when you go to www.google.com, google.com is the domain. That’s the name of the website. So when you go to mattrobinson.blog, that’s my domain. So you could think about as my house, my domain is my house, my house lives on some digital land that I own and I pay for on an ongoing basis. Yeah. In the same way that you might pay a mortgage on a house or you’re paying like your ground rent on a house, it’s the same sort of concept you paying to have this house in a place that you are taking ownership of.

And that’s how I’ve decided to build mine. So I have bought a domain for a very cheap price. I think it costs me about 10 quid. I pay for like an ongoing hosting package that keeps that domain live on that land each month and comes with like regular updates and things like that. And again, this is, this is relatively low cost compared to many of the other ways I’ve done this in the past. Um, so the idea behind this is, is a quiet like the fact that does an element of me owning the property and sought of the land that it’s on. Yes, I’m relying on a hosting company to host that website for me. But what I can actually do at any moment in time is I can download a backup of my website and I can take that elsewhere. So if for any reason I wanted to change who hosts my website or if I wanted to pay for something a bit more premium and a bit more high end because I own the hosting that, my website is begin built on, I’ve got the power to actually just click a button that downloads a full backup of my website and I can take that anywhere I want and I can just make my domain live somewhere else.

If for any reason I’m not happy with the service or there’s lots of downtime or anything like that, I can change that at any moment in time. This is something I couldn’t do when my website was living elsewhere on other platforms and things like that. I couldn’t just pick it up and move it if I needed to. And then came a point where it did need to and it’s at that point you realize, Oh God, I’m going to have to start again. I’m going to have to start from scratch. So this method, the I’m doing things is really reasonable in terms of price. You know you can get something like this set up for less than 50 quid and that’s what I’ll show you to do in the videos that are going to live on the show notes page of this, uh, of this episode.

That’s what I’ll show you how to do there. And so it’s really, really like, reasonable and affordable. And that will have your website online for the full year. That’s that sort of start-up cost will keep you going for a full year. What we can then do is, is where that in full control to make any quick changes that you might want to do. So the changes you make to your website can be done very quickly and easily and it keeps the cost relatively low in terms of maintenance as well. So this set up for me has been sort of the pinnacle of how I’ve ran various different websites over time. This is the one I’m most happy with. This that I’ve got right now is the way that I think is the best way for most people. Even if you’re just starting out the bit that does become more difficult in doing this is the actual design part.

The creative side of it is a little bit more difficult, but if you’re someone that sat there now and you’ve already got like a logo that’s been designed for you or some sought of you know, brand in relating to your website or your personal brand, this is a great place to start. This is a great sort of way of that stuff sought of takes care of some of the design elements for you and what I do is with my website, I use my hosting company. They installed some software onto it for me automatically called WordPress, which is like a blogging software. That’s a very, very easy software to use an edit. What I then do is I use a premium theme, which again I’ll show you in the videos attached to this and this premium theme allows me to choose some very, very professional looking designs that I can then use in a drag and drop format to make the design process very easy.

So, if I want to put an image in, I just inserted a drag it where a wants it and a drop it there. If I, I’ll put some text in. I do the same. I’m write the text I drag, I drop here, a change the font, change the size, change the colour, like you’d be amazed at how difficult some of these things can be when you design in a website. So I just use this premium theme, which again is relatively low cost to allow me to take control of a lot of that design element and take out a lot of the headaches that you would have around this. So again, as I’ve alluded to, a lot of this information is going to be by living in a video that’s on mattrobinson.blog/041 so please go and check that out because you’ll see this in action.

You’ll see how I built my website and I’m actually going to take you through the live process of building another trainer’s website for him so that you can see what it actually looks like and the simple process behind it. And the actual costs involved cause it’s, it’s more um, understandable if you get to see it in action. So that’s what I’m going to show you through that. That’s what you need to know on the hosting side of things. In terms of the domain name, in terms of the actual house that I’ve talked about, the main consideration there is, is the name itself. So what domain name do you go? For me personally, I went for my name, unfortunately my name is relatively common so I couldn’t get like mattrobinson.com or mattrobinson.co.uk unless I was willing to spend a lot of money to buy that domain.

So, I went down the route of mattrobinson. blog but you might find that your name is available, and you can just get, you know, your name.com or your name.co.uk Um, or your name, fitness or something like that. In an ideal world, I would try and get a.com or a. co.uk but don’t get too hung up on that cause like in my circumstance, I’ve had to go for. Blog, the actual name of your website, you know, it’s not the be all and end all, you know, it could matter in terms of certain circumstances regarding um, search engine optimization and things like that. But that’s when things get a little bit technical. For now, I would just say, look, if it revolves around your name at any moment in time, you can change what’s on that website and it’s still relevant.

It’s still related to you. So even if it was just run it as a personal blog and had nothing to do with fitness, it doesn’t matter because it’s is your name. It could, it could change and manoeuvre in any which way you want. Whereas, if it was something very specific, like let’s say for example, mine was Matt Robinson, strength and conditioning.com one it’s a really long domain name which has a bit of a pain in the backside, but also we are like really limits what I can pull out in terms of content on there and what people’s expectation would be in London on that website. So I’ve kept it fairly generic. It’s just mattrobinson.blog and then with filtering people into the content that I can put out there in various different forms. So don’t spend too long getting caught up on the domain name if you can make it based around your name, I think that’s a great way to go.

If you can get a. co.uk or a .com I think that’s a great way to go. And again, we can do this at a very low cost with regards to the domain name and hosting. What I’ve been able to do for the listeners of this podcast is actually set us all up with a discount sold that we can all get this cheaper. So if you go to mattrobinson.blog/041 the video is going to be there and underneath the video is going to be the links that you need to actually go to a website, buy your domain name and by your hosting and then there’s going to be a coupon code, which is matt51. If you put in matt51 you will get 51% discount on your whole package, which means we are getting it for less than half price. So because I was going to be doing this through the podcast and announcing it to a lot of people, I was able to talk to the people who I host my website with and get them to do me a bit of a deal, which was very nice of them.

So hopefully that becomes very useful to you. This is how we can now do this at very, very low cost power of a podcast is we can uh, we can sought these things out for you guys and give you a bit of discount and things like that. All the links in that are going to be on there for you to use that. You might as well go through that and make use of that discount as opposed to going somewhere else and having to pay full price, I use them for a reason. I use them for very, because they are very good, the very reliable and the my website’s never down. It never crashes. So you know you’ve got to look for quality as well. And that’s why I use these guys. That’s why I’m confident in sort of promoting them and introducing you guys to them.

So, go over there and have a look at that. And even on the hosting front, you’ll see that once you there there’s lots of different options of what you can get for your money in different price brackets and things. And again, that’s Another reason why I would like you to look at the video because I’m going to talk you through what you need to look for and because it doesn’t have to cost you a lot of money, you can spend a bit more money if you want certain features. But for most people starting out, you just simply might not need that yet. And what you need to remember is, is because you own the land and you own the property, you can upgrade these things at any moment in time and go higher up that price chain if you need some of the features that that would allow you access to.

So, you have to get caught up on too many of these things up front. We can do them as we go along and we can change them as we go along so that it meets the needs of you and your website and your brand and whatever it is that you’re going to use that website for. That’s how you look at sorting out the hosting. That’s how you look at salting out the domain. There’s a lot technical stuff in there, so let’s take a little breather. Let’s tie it all together and we’ll give you some links and stuff so that you can actually go away and start implementing some of this information.

Okay, so to recap, we’ve looked to what it is that you might want to get online and we’ve decided that it’s going to be something form of blog or website. We’ve looked at the different ways you can do that. You can go down the route of using like an online website building, you can get designer involved, you can go down the solid DIY route where you own the land, you own the property and you’re in control of the design and the changes. I’ve told you that that’s the route I went down and give you a few of the reasons why, you know it’s relatively low cost. I get to c keep complete control. You know the properties built on my land. I can move that property anywhere I want. It’s quite fluid. I can pay for more features if I need them. I can take features a way if I don’t need them, and it’s quite easy to get set up and then I can plug in something else to help me with the design side of things, which again, just makes life very easy and gives me a lot of power through my website in terms of creating like membership areas and things like that and making it look really fancy and professional even if I’ve not got a lot of knowledge of how to do that. So, it gives me a lot of power with a very little upfront cost and commitment. And I can see whether this is something that I’m going to do for a long period of time. And at that point, once I’ve decided, Oh yeah, you know, I’ve been doing this six months, now I might want to take this more seriously, I can start paying a bit more for a few of those features and things like that.

If that’s the route I want to go down. So that’s what we’ve looked at. All of this can be up through one singular place, one singular company. And that’s, that’s the guys that I’ve managed to hook you up with a discount with. Um, so if you head on over to the show notes page, all the links and that will be on there. They’ll also be mentioned in the video. And for those of you that are on the email list, I’ll be sending it out to you guys as well. On there, you’ll be the guys that see this video and that first. Um, so if you’re not on that email list, make sure you get on there. You can see how to join that through the website and through the show notes page. So that’s what we need to get set up. Moving forwards we’re then going to look at how you would use that website to deliver some content and actually go about building yourself a bit of an email list as well so that you can actually communicate with your audience whenever you want, however you want.

And naturally in a way that delivers really, really good engagement when compared to what’s going on, on social media and elsewhere. Right now, you know, I sent an email out the other day and yeah it’s only going out to a relatively small list, but I can see that like 70 odd percent of people have read that email, which is brilliant, like really, really good compared to what I would get on social media. And then I can even see how many people like clicked the link in that email as well, which is phenomenal. Again, it’s a really good number. Um, these are all things that you’ll be able to do yourself. And even if your audience is small, it doesn’t matter. It really, really doesn’t matter because if you get in the level of engagement that you should be getting and that you deserve, you won’t need a massive audience.

You won’t need a massive list of people. And it’s fairly easy to start building this up one or two people at the time. You know, you start getting a few people joining every week and before you know it, these numbers start to get bigger and bigger and bigger. And if you can keep the engagement high, or increasing over time, you will find that you’re doing, you’re doing really well in terms of communicating with your audience and impacting them in a much better way than you ever could through a social media platform where even if your audience is growing, your engagement and your organic reach is always going down. So to finish off with a quick reminder of where you need to go, if you want to go about getting all this stuff set up, please head straight over to mattrobinson.blog forward slash zero four one we’re going to have the show notes on that.

We’re going to have a video on that. We’re going to have the relevant links on there that will give you everything you need to get off the ground with actually setting up in a domain and setting up your hosting. And I’ll also have in there some information regarding the premium theme that I use to take care of the design side of things. That will probably be a separate video on that page that will live there. So that’s where you need to head over if you haven’t done so already, join the email list while you’re there because a lot of ongoing content relating to this topic is going to be sent out via email, especially if people want to reach out and ask for help and advice. The easiest way for them to do that is just reply to the emails that I send out and I always get back to people and help them out.

So that’s where you need to head on over to uh, I hope that this gives you saw of the bit of advice and the bit of help that you need to get this off the ground cause I know a lot of you have been reaching out and telling me that this is something that you want a bit of help with and you want to know how I’ve done it. So we’re going to walk you through it step by step and hopefully this will give you that bit of confidence to go ahead and give it a go because we can do a relatively low cost, relatively low risk. If you use the sort of step by step walkthrough that I’ve put together for you, it’s actually not that time consuming to get set up and once it’s setup, it’s just a case of going in there once a week posting your latest content or whatever and then getting, getting people towards your email list.

So that’s all for today. I will be back again very soon with episode forty two where we will discuss the email stuff. In the meantime please, you know, share the show wherever you can. If you know someone that is looking to get help with this sort of stuff, share this with them, make them aware that it’s out there and that they can get this free walk through series of how to actually get this stuff off the ground. So please make sure you share it where you can and like I say if you haven’t done so already. Head on over to the blog. Get on the email list there because that will give you direct access to a lot of this stuff as I’m drip feeding it out to you. If you do in this along, along with me releasing the content that you’re doing this in real time, it works really well if you’ve got access to the emails as well. So that’s all for today. I’ll be back with you very soon till next time, take care. Have a good one and please let me know if you need any help with anything. Cheers.

How To Get Your Fitness Business Online

Before I get in to the details of these show notes, if you haven’t done so already, please listen to Episode 40 as this episode is the first of this 3-part mini series.

In the first part of the mini-series I discussed the idea of ‘Rethinking Your Online Strategy‘ and wanted to explore the idea of what it would like to build your own platform for you online business.

In this episode, I discuss exactly how to go about setting up your own platform.

What would your online platform look like?

For most, it would be as simple as a standard website/blog where you can share valuable content to your audience and aim to get them subscribed to your email list.

What are the different options for building an online platform?

I believe there are 3 key ways you can do this…

Online Website Builder – this is where you would use someone else’s online platform to build your own platform on top of. It’s a relatively cheap and easy option, but I liken it to the idea of ‘building your house on someone else’s land‘.

Hire a designer – this is the most professional option but comes with a hefty upfront price tag and ongoing retainer fees. It is also an option that slows down the process of being able to make edits and updates to your website.

Build your own house on your own land – this is the approach I have taken and it simply involves buying a domain (house) and buying some hosting (land) so that you have a place to live online. The costs are still really low with this option (you can get started for about £40 using the discounts I have arranged for you below) and gives you a lot of flexibility and the ability to move or change your website at ANY time.
